2015 NABA Scholarship Winners Announced!
The North Avenue Business Association (NABA) is proud to announce Suzanna Griest and Ian Mahanes as the winners of this year’s NABA Scholarships. Both are seniors at Oak Park River Forest High School. Both will receive $1,000 scholarships at the Oak Park River Forest High School Convocation May 19th.
Suzanna is an Oak Park Resident interested in Business and Arts/ceramics. She will be attending Goshen College with a double major in Business and Studio Art with a concentration in wheel throwing.
Suzanna not only has an exemplary academic record, but also does extensive community service working with the OPRF Infant Welfare Society and OPRF Freshman Mentoring Program. Suzanna is also Co-Captain of the OPRF Cross Country Team.
Ian Mahanes is a River Forest resident who wants to major in finance and minor in economics at a school to be announced.
Like Suzanna, Ian is not only outstanding in the classroom but very sports and community service minded. He is president of the local Best Buddies Chapter where he mentors young men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is student coach of the Hornets Sled Hockey Team which teaches kids with physical disabilities how to play hockey.
Ian has also been captain of the OPRF Lacrosse team the past two years.
“Both Suzanna and Ian are very deserving of this year’s NABA Scholarships and will do great things in the business world and their communities in the future.” says NABA President Lee Owens. “I would also like to give a special thanks to our 2015 NABA Scholarship Committee headed by Alan Gorstein from Almart Furniture, Christian Harris of Maid Pro of Oak Park and Richard Jung from Minuteman Press of Oak Park. Despite their busy schedules, these three were committed to getting the word out about our scholarship and picking the best candidates possible. ”
NABA Scholarship Description:
The North Avenue Business Association awards a $1000.00 scholarship to two graduating high school seniors, planning on attending a college or university, majoring in business or in a related field.
Students applying must reside in the Village of Oak Park, River Forest and the Chicago neighborhoods of Galewood and parts of Austin. Chicago resident boundaries include Armitage (2000 North) to the north, Division (1200 North) to the south, Austin (6000 West) to the east and Harlem (7200 West) to the west.
Eligible students must rank in the upper 20% of their class, have a 3.00 GPA, a combined ACT score of 21 and demonstrate financial need. Students must complete an application, write an essay, provide a copy of their academic transcript, and two letters of recommendation. A complete list of criteria is included with the application.
